Were all Washburn (early 80s) A10, A15, A20's made in the Matsumoku Plant?

Post by Lunatech78 on Sat Aug 07, 2010 7:34 pm

I have an A-15 that I bought new in 1984 and was never aware that it could've been made in the same plant as my Spectrum II.

Also worth having a look around the Washburn Guitar Forums, couple of threads about Uncle Mat DNA on there.

Alright my fellow GAS sufferers, I got a few pics here for ya I guess it was rather rude of me to ask a question and not even have the courtesy of including a single pic Now these are a few of my favorite things!

http://img823.imageshack.us/i/importedphotos00007n.jpg/

The gold top LP is a 72 that has been refinished. (someone painted it white!) It needs a few more parts to get it correct for the period. The others are mostly copies that are daily players, and of course the A-15. Back in the day when I gigged with the A-15 the other guitar player in our band played a Sunburst A-20. Man I loved the sound of that guitar. Well - it's back to the Spectrum Project!!! I'll be posting more pics as progress is made.

I don't know whether I like that or not; upon reflection I believe I do!! And I know the Washburn crew at Matsumoku.org would love to see it as well as they have nothing about this model over there atm!!

Yes, the LP was a gift (16th birthday) and it was white when I got it. I had no idea it was originally a gold top until the PUP wells were opened up 35 years later. Thanks for the compliment.

Yes John, I am registered on the Matsumoku forum and I will definitely post pix of the A-15 over there.

Luna.

No.
Not all Washys were made at Matsumoku.
Some of them were contracted to be built by Yamaki, and this holds true for the A series amongst others to our findings over here.
The highend Wings, some of the A series and some of the HM series can be either basicaly.

From what weve gathered tho it is EITHER Matsumoku OR Yamaki.

Yamaki in general, from what it seems, more often involved in the highend builds.

If you search this forum for "Daion" youll see a prime example of what Yamaki was capable of in its heyday.

Thanks for the tip, I checked out some of the Daion posts. Very impressive, now I have a few more to add to my wish list.

Just curious, are there any identifying marks inside the A-15 that would tell me where it was made?

No not really.
You spot a Yamaki vs a Mat on the little stuff.
Like the shade of the caps and stuff like that.
TMK Yamaki for instance didnt use the Mat typical philips set screw underneath the neckpup, but this on the other hand is NOT a rule.

In general, from what ive concluded, most of the lower digit A series and Wings were made by Mat and the other way around for a couple of yrs around the break of the 80s.
After that it was all Mat.

For instance all the neckthroguh A20s ive seen have been Yamaki.
Friend of mine stopped by with a SC equipped A15 a while back and that was clearly Mat.

Most Falcon and Hawk at least were Yamaki at one point while Ravens were mostly Mat.

Daion in turn was Yamakis housebrand very much like Westone was Mats.

If you want me to im sure i can muster a couple of examples of various Washburns in this case as ive both owned a few and in turn worked on others.
