Future Westone Acquisitions?

Post by Brainfertilizer on Sat May 14, 2011 6:50 pm

Okay, I know where I can get a 1988 UK Westone Spectrum Series II SP2111ST (standard trem) in good shape for $100 shipped. The pickguard was probably swapped out, as it has a HB in the bridge instead of a SC. I also know where I can get a 1989 Westone Challenger for $200.

Both are in decent condition.

Are there any advantages of the Challenger that should make it a worthwhile acquisition?

I nearly grabbed the SP2111ST when I was looking for a vintage-trem-equipped strat, but the HB bridge made me pause (and then a friend found me a Hamer Slammer Series strat, taking care of THAT...but that's a story for a different forum). But I've liked the Hamer Slammer Series strat enough that I've started to think about getting the SP2111ST and getting a new pickguard to return it to a 3SC configuration. I like Westone necks enough that the idea of a strat-sounding guitar w/ a Westone neck makes me shiver with excitement. But I have no way of knowing if the two remaining pickups are even stock, or what SC I should put into it to match with the other 2 if they *are* stock. Or if I should get it and rock it as it is. Or if I should not get it.

I have 30 guitars currently...I can't play the ones I have with any regularity. There are at least 5 that became closet queens, holding onto for collectability more than to play.

I'm getting the Challenger.

The other one is a little more beat up.

Plus, the more I look at the picture, the more I realize it cannot be an SP2111ST. It has only 2 knobs, not 3. Plus, the angle of the pickguard leaving the top of the bridge looks slightly different.

After looking at it, I'm starting to think it is actually a Challenger that they put a 6-screw trem in to replace the FR. Not sure, tho. I've asked the manager for more pictures.

If not that, then it might be a Westone neck stock on some other strat copy body.

I saw one of these recently in my local Craigslist. A blue one. For the price you can't go wrong, I think there were around $450 new. Cool

I love how Westone's are such GREAT bargains nowadays...
