MMK 45 Allen key type vs. screw type pole pieces

Post by munkieNL on Wed Jun 01, 2011 6:40 am

Hi All! It's been a while, it's been quiet on the Westone front but not on the Mat front Laughing

Just scored this Vantage Avenger X-77. Around the corner this time, usually i have to travel across the country to pick up Mat guitars, or have them sent to me unseen. Non-original bridge saddles, a little fretwear, a little buckle rash. Hey it's from 1983. The price was right.

It sports this type of humbuckers. Allen type pole pieces, looks like a DiMarzio. Looks just like the humbuckers on my Westone Thunder Jet.

Surprise. Real MMK45's! I may be getting delusions but i do hear a difference compared to the screw type pole piece MMK 45's as found in my Vantage AV325. The Allen type sound more like DiMarzio to me, the screw type more like Seymour Duncans. Know what i mean? Any opinions?

BTW, more new kids on the block. Washburn Force 2. Hondo II Professional with MMK 45's. I need help Rolling Eyes

Great guitar. And in very good condition too!
I have the "T" version (single pup) and it's a really versatile guitar. My MMK45 measures at 11.2K and rattles the shingles on the roof!
Here's a LINK for comparison.

Nice catch!

After the usual cleanup and setup it looks OK for its age. And it plays and sounds amazing. I know the recession lingers on, the guitar market is still weak. But it amazes me how you can buy such a quality vintage guitar anno 2011 for this price. I mean everybody's got internet, it's a transparent market. It's a bitching hard rock/metal guitar but pull up the tone pot knobs and you're in the Fender ballpark. Excellent for rhythm or SRV style bluez.
