That is kinda strange D Fuzz, i thought for sure you'd have a stamp in there. Shocked I was wrong about the neck pocket, i guess they stamped the pickup cavity instead. Maybe they made them somewhere else also. My P bass copy has the same headstock as the Lead II copies and i LOVE the neck on it! Rockin, here are a few pics:

I'll post some pictures on the project i'm getting soon, see where that sucker is made. By the way, the neck thru i started this thread with is no longer BIN and being bidded on,lets see where she ends up.

Well, i got my Hondo pro II project guitar today and its in pretty good shape. Smile Its a LP copy and i thought it was a Tokai because of the neck plate, until i removed the pickups and found these! cheers

I was even happier when each pickup read a little over 10 ohms on the meter and weren't dead. They were not connected to the rest of the electronics which seem to be original. The guitar was stripped and refinished horribly by a previous owner who just brushed laquer on it Mad and even covered the pickups with it. Shocked Any advice on how to clean these would be greatly appreciated. Very Happy

I guess he removed the pickups to put the lame finish on it. It seems to originally have been a white guitar. All mahogany body and neck, a little beaten up but its all there.

Its only missing the nut and input jack, so it should be an easy project except for sanding/applying a new finish. The neck looks great and the frets are in excellent shape. Its also missing a saddle and screw on the bridge, anyone know if these are easy to find?

Here is a close up of one of the pots if it looks familiar to anyone.

I'm pretty happy about this one, it should be fun! bounce Looks like i might have a Matt on my hands.

That is a copy of a Gibson "The Paul"

I have two set neck Vantage versions known as Vantage Ghosts also made by Matsumoku with MMK 45's. Just about my favourites in my whole collection. Absolutely fantastic guitars.

Great score - You will love it!!

Nice detective work there hobster! With a little TLC and patience she'll be great again. Smile

As for cleaning the pups, that's a bit tricky since you are not sure what's on there. You say "lacquer" but it could be urethane, varnish, shellac, etc.
I'd stay away from chemical stripping as it would likely eat the plastic too, and potentially damage the windings! The safest route, I think, is to treat the pups the same as you would when restoring the guitar finish...progressive fine sanding followed by a light buffing with polishing compound.

Good luck with the resto!

Thanks guys, i'm looking forward to this project later in the winter when i have more time. Great advice Barry, i'm a little afraid to use any chemicals so i'll do what you suggested. I checked the MMKs again and one reads 11.6 and the other about 10.7 so i'm pretty sure i know which is the neck/bridge pickup.
By the way Hoax, i had a The Paul in high school i got from my neighbor for a couple of hundred bucks. Wish i had kept that one! I traded it for a Charvel in the late 80's, ya know, it was the metal years. Wink

The lacquer looks like brush on. I've used a blunted stanley blade with much care with good results.

I had that laquer all over my FX's fretboard, and I do mean ALL OVER. It was caked on thick completely covering the rosewood. I used fingernail polish remover and steel wool, worked a treat. Never tried it on plastic, however, may discolor it. After you're done scraping the plastic, use a polishing compound and rub them good. I did this with my FX also, restored the color and made it nice and smooth.

Fingernail polish remover, Acetone, will melt the plastic, rapidly and total the pup windings.

ACETONE.....KEEP WELL AWAY FROM PICKUPS

Acetone is also used to stick binding to a guitar. It melts the plastic to the wood.

Yeah everybody, so like I way saying... don't use acetone! Laughing

That polishing compound really works however, made my pup's plastic look new again. Also cleaned my pup poles very well. Pretty cool. Cool

Just to let you guys know the neck thru that started this thread just went for a little under $400 bucks. Very reasonable for a beautiful guitar. This thread is a little random, maybe this should be renamed the Hondo thread Very Happy
Thanks again for the advice on removing the finish on the pickups.

I got that one on ebay (USA) as a project (which i still need to finish) and got a little lucky. Didn't expect it to be Matsumoku made, most were Tokai. They pop up often on ebay over here, i own 4 Hondo II pro's and i really love them all. I hope you can find one over there, good luck!

It was less than $100 but it was also pretty beat up. They rarely exceed $200-250 for any Hondo II and some are worth that and alot more imho. If i see another i'll pm you and give you a heads up. Very Happy

That's a class Hondo.

Picked this up awhile back. Seems to be like hobsters one. Same markings on bottom of tailpiece/bridge and pups.

Looking at that neck. It's just as a Fender from the 70's with the veneer type fingerboard, even has the 'high up' truss rod as per vintage guits. Bet it has s skunk stripe.

No skunk stripe actually, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard. I thought the skunk stripe is only on all maple necks like strats where the truss rod was inserted, whereas it can be inserted prior to the fingerboard on necks like this one. Did that make sense?
These copies were pretty dead on with the originals, she's just like a P bass. Very Happy I love slapping on this thing!

Yup, those MMK's were exclusively placed in Matsumoku guitars and were made by Matts. Its really cool if you think about it, how many factories actually made their own pickups? None i can think of.

If it has MMK's like yours it was made at the Matsumoku factory, unless they were switched out, which is highly unlikely on your axe.
