Post by narval on Thu Dec 15, 2011 9:09 pm

hello!!! I'm a newbie, and I have 2 guitars, I must pick just one, and I cant play with those guitars (internet sellers). so... The les paul style guitar is (I guess) a westone. But it is, for real? what can I expect from that guitar? I play pop, rock, blues...

Hello Narval, welcome to the forum. Can you get better closeups of the headstocks?

If that Les Paul copy indeed is a Westone it most likely is from the current "westone" line that is made in China and sold primarily through a German based company. All I have heard of them tops out as so-so at best.

As far as that Strat copy at least the variety of switches appears interesting.

That's like the one in the case.
Made in Italy, nothing to do with Westone Japan

Hello there Naval. Choosing only one of two guitars can get fuzzy, but we'll belly up to the bar and try to hit this on the button. Wink

We don't know much about the Italian made instruments, like it appears your "Westone" is. You have two iconic guitar styles there, a Stratocaster and a Les Paul. Each will sound inherantly different. Primarily because of pickups, single coils vs. humbuckers.

1. Which one of your two guitars sounds better to you?
2. Which one feels easier for you to play, and more enjoyable for you to play?
3. Which one seems to be of better quality?
Answer those questions and you'll know which one to keep.

Both styles of guitar are commonly used for pop, rock, and blues.

Can you post pictures of the back of the headstock of each guitar? I want to see the tuners. Tuners sometimes indicate quality.

i say you should go for the strat style guitar because:

1. you get a classic looking guitar that can be used to play all styles
2. if you want to change to humbuckers the parts are easily available and should fit with very minor modification to your guitar.

Good point Gittarasaurus, but he already has a strat style Musima.

Naval, maybe you should keep the "Westone", because you already have a Strat style guitar. Does the Musima have humbuckers or single coil pickups? If the Musima has single coils, then keep the Westone. If the Musima has humbuckers, then keep the other one.

p90 copies?

Bottom line: Humbuckers ROCK and are great for distorted playing, leads
Single cols are better for soulful solos and playing, have a great "quack" and tone but sound rough when adding distortion.

If you are playing distorted rock go with the LP copy, Pink Floyd type rock go with the strat.

Beautiful guitar! That's different enough that you could keep either strat or les paul. For heavier sounds, go with the Westone. For potentially more bell like and bluesy sounds, go with strat. Let us know what you decide.

Looks like Hobster and I are on the same page.

I swear that strat has a Hondo label on it. I've seen Hondos with that cursive style writing on them before, but i could be wrong. Wouldn't it be awesome if it was a Hondo copy! lol!

argh, I cant pick up one... I'm more like rhythm guitar, playing some 60's-70's kind of stuff... effects, just some overdrive/soft-to-mid distortion, wah wah...

In that case, I'd go with the Westone. Although strats were used too, the Les Paul types are well known in the classic rock sound (particularly the 70's). Humbuckers + Marshall amp = classic rock!!! Cool

I don't think that you could make a wrong choice here, so just go with the Westone and don't regret it. If you were doing more lead guitar, I'd certainly keep the Strat. Since you're not, the Westone wins. Very Happy

well hello again!

So... I've decided: westone will be. After x-mas time, the owner will send her.

And what a bargain! The story is, I've won a digital camera on a magazine. A cheap, cheap one...But actually, I've already a camera, and I've ask to the guitar owner if he want to trade. He acept.

Laughing I want to know more and more about westone guitars. I have some other guitars (Teisco, Musima, Epiphone, Cort...) so it's time to know something new!
