So I think think I will try using the dremmel as my engraver and give it a shot. I have a few sheets of pickguard material so I have plenty of material to make mistakes on Smile

Those TRC's look very good West

Like tailor made! Nice work Arthur with those pics it's self explanatory.
Attention to detail and craftmenship that is of course why we are all so impressed with Matsumoku's fame. Why we love those instruments and why guys like you restore them to their original glory with perfection. When you think of it, it is in a way astonishing that a factory with so much innovative ideas and expertise which cranked out a staggering production had to go bankrupt. Which as a side note also explains why some of 'm weren't really that good after all or suffered from bad set ups. I just can't help think they could have been in the same leak as Ibanez nowadays if they had gotten the time and trust with smarter management. Never forget the ones that died too young.

btw totally off topic as well a Westone acoustic catalogue with Greco's in it for sale in Japan as of now. I never knew it had been part of it but the pics tell the story. http://page9.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/k158425752 Westone did have a long building history before they entered the electric market!

Forgive me Pat it's your epic thread and I really, really liked Trevor replied. But it doesn't surprise me either because you my friend are honouring him a lot for, as an endorser it must have been his idea, the 12 string! With all the effort you put in recreating it, how nice is that?

Which reminds me of the video I saw of one of my heroes, George Benson from NAMM 2012 he endorses Ibanez and of course has all kinds of signature models. He played without a pick! Chord melody in the style of Wes Montgomery and later Johny Smith! Now the man has a very unconventional but effective picking technique on it's own. Couldn't believe what I saw and I've been to his concerts! It also showed he knows he's luckie to have this gift and lets visitors play his guitar and shows his respect. How nice and humble and human he is as a person the contrary of arrogant, and grateful for the people that make it possible by buying his music and his gear and are all involved in making love to music. It must be inspiring!

Friday evening, cheap beers and maybe getting a tad sentimental but hey, in my local pub they have no idea what I'm bragging about when I do. Gotta do it somewhere.

Let's make some Ebony dust!

So I watched the Youtube video by David Fletcher where he shows how to avoid seeing the ends on the frets on the side of the neck and it is a really great method.
He has some great vids on youtube.

When I installed the frets I cut the tangs about 1/8 to 1/4 inch off the ends so they would not protrude out of the side of the neck, so the top of the fret hits the edge but not the part of the fret that is inside the board. This leaves an exposed part of the fret slot that needs to be filled:

First, drop some thin super glue into the slot:

Then take some Ebony dust and cover the slot. Use a toothpick to mash it in the slot. Add a bit more dust on the top of it. Then add one more drop of glue:

Let it dry, then sand it smooth:

And the dust blends in nicely. This can be done with rosewood as well. I haven't tried it with maple yet, but I assume it would work as well.

Now ready for some paint eh.

First coats - just looks so weird in black after working with it all this time. Making sure not to put it too heavy around the heel as it is a close fit in the pocket right now, so very little paint will be on where the heel joins the body:

Done with the color for today. I'll wetsand tomorrow and then work on getting the headstock logo in place. Then clear coat it up. Still have some work to do on the body but I'm focused on finishing this one. I have 7 projects going on at the moment and it is not productive. Going to focus on one at a time from now on (yeah right) or at least try to.

Logo time!

So since Ink Jet printers are unable to print white, I had to buy decal paper that is white instead of clear, and then print the black surrounding the logo. I wet sanded real quick with 800 and 1000 grits to get it flat and applied the logo. It looks flat black at them moment from wet sanding but I'm about to put some clear coats then dry over night and do a bit more tomorrow.

Thanks sir, I'm really trying on this one. Did some clear coats tonight, but the Florida humidity is not a friend when it comes to spraying, so not much done with the clear tonight. Going to be humid and rainy all week, so not sure if I can get all the clear down soon. we'll see.

So I bring the neck into the house from the garage since the humidity is killing the drying process and I see this giant fingerprint on the neck....ugh...I don't remember touching the neck at all! so some sanding is in order. Extra work for a dumb mistake. Oh well

Thanks all for the nice words. The lacquer I sprayed was very tough with the Fla humidity so it's been difficult to dry. But I have enough coats on there and they are dry enough to wet sand again flat. So I'll wet sand to 1000 grit tomorrow to be sure it is all flat, and then spray the final coats. In the meanwhile, here is how is stands ( shiny enough to see part of my reflection in the headstock, but not flat yet)

So tomorrow, I hope to get the remaining clear on the neck, and then perhaps start on the body. Light at the end of the tunnel eh.

I sprayed a bit more clear on the neck today, and it is drying slowly with the humidity.
So, why not work on finish sanding the body and start painting? No reason. So be it.

I have to say, I am really pleased to see that there is not the slightest hint that this body had a tremolo route or an input jack on the face of the guitar. This is just a few coats - no sanding yet - an a lot still to be done, but you would never know this guitar had the trem or that jack even with the few coats applied.
I have the bridge, but still need to get the switches/knobs and decide what PUPS to put in. Might have to get a few new knobs from Tvill as they are a great replacement.

Couldn't help myself - had to lay the neck and body down with tape and all just to get an idea of what it's gonna look like:

Done wet sanding the neck, and polished it up, threw on the tuners.
Did a quick wetsand to the body with 800 grit to flatten it out before the remaining coats and figured I'd take a pic as it stands.

Neck still needs truss rod cover fabrication and I'll order a few nutblanks tomorrow (my least favorite part of the process).

Also need to make the control covers and order up some new electronics - not sure what I'm putting in there yet. I was thinking about the Jimmy Page LP style toggle switch that can do 3 position single, 3 HB, or any different number of switching. So still a ways to go..

Re: Rabin Spectrum 12 string replica

So a problem arises. This clear on the neck was dried for days, wet sanded and polished, all set... put it on the guitar stand for the previous pic, and left it overnight and this blotch is what I see. Something not right about this clear coat - took longer to dry (even with the humidity) but seems to be flawed. Same poly clear I have used before, but alas, I can't have that, so I need to sand it down and will redo all of the clear. Ugh, it was going so well. But if I want it to come out great then I need to be patient.

In the meanwhile, the body paint is done and is drying in the coat closet (my wife hates this) and is ready for a quick wet sand and then clear coat it.

So a bit frustrating to redo the neck finish, but happy with the body. Being patient and not accepting flaws is hard to do, but I learning that is the norm with this stuff (hopefully I get better). Will sand the neck tomorrow and try again.

Preparing for wetsanding. 800, 1000, 1500. took out some very small drips and looked good.

First couple of coats of clear. Getting shiny. Wind is picking up, so no more coats so I avoid some dust from outside getting on it. With this white - everything shows up on it. Time to build a proper spray booth eh.

You're the envy of us all, beautiful colour too, top marks!

I have the same problem with the dull spots from the stand, with acrylic lacquer on 2 guitars and antique oil on another.
It's the rubber or foam reacting with the clear, don't know how or why, I now use a soft cotton cloth over the stands rubber tubing to rest the neck

Sanding is fun.  So I think the problem was spraying to much laquer without proper drying time bewteen coats.  Having let it sit a long time, the clear is now hard so started sanding it down to see if I can get it smooth without having to do extra coats.  No wet sanding, just dry 600 to start with and it is good.  Next will be some wet sanding to see if I can get it right without adding additional coats.

Sorry for the delay on this one.  I really made a poor choice on the clear, it yellowed on the white and needs to be redone.  I've been building guitars from scratch so  this guitar has been on the back burner.  Sad as this was my primary project months ago.  I'm  almost done with my current build and now that the humidity is now subsiding in florida I will get to finishing this one and my X390 with a darker green.  Lesson learned, too many projects = nothing gets finished.

So I sanded a corner in the top right of this pic to show the difference in the white with the Clear I used.  Lighting doesn't make it as obvious in the pic, but you can see most of the guitar is 'yellowed' a bit, and the part I sanded is much brighter.

My plan is to make it look new, I'm not going for a faded vintage look.  I ordered new clear 2 weeks ago and it is finally showing up tomorrow after a few emails to the company.

While I don't mind sanding, I don't like sanding something I've already done so that has put this on the back burner.  But I should have it sanded back to white Saturday, and then if I don't sand through the color, then spray the clear later in the day.  If all goes well, let it dry for a week or two, then wetsand and put this one together and sell to Corsair Smile   Oh wait - I'm keeping this one eh!

Jon - I can always make another, but It would not be cheap Smile  Keep your eye out for a cheap Spectrum body, and when you are ready for one, let me know.  I still have the template for the neck I built, and you can come up with all kinds of ideas to have it the way ya want it.

That being said, I did sand down the yellowish clear on the body and neck today.  I started to spray the new clear on the neck and it is looking goooooood.

It actually looks nicer than the first try as I got to flatten out some odd spots on the headstock.

Also did a final clear coat on a Tele build that I'm doing that is bound for NJ as soon as it is dry and wetsanded.    Did I mention I sanded and sprayed a lot today?

So I finished taking the yellow clear off today - the inner part of these horns are not fun to sand.   Sanded down to the wood in a few spots so started to add some additional coats of white, but glad to see it bright white again.   I will add more white to it tomorrow then let it dry for a bit before applying the new clear.  This is the project on the top of my list at the moment so hopefully will get this done soon
