Done wet sanding the neck, and polished it up, threw on the tuners.
Did a quick wetsand to the body with 800 grit to flatten it out before the remaining coats and figured I'd take a pic as it stands.

Neck still needs truss rod cover fabrication and I'll order a few nutblanks tomorrow (my least favorite part of the process).

Also need to make the control covers and order up some new electronics - not sure what I'm putting in there yet. I was thinking about the Jimmy Page LP style toggle switch that can do 3 position single, 3 HB, or any different number of switching. So still a ways to go..

So a problem arises. This clear on the neck was dried for days, wet sanded and polished, all set... put it on the guitar stand for the previous pic, and left it overnight and this blotch is what I see. Something not right about this clear coat - took longer to dry (even with the humidity) but seems to be flawed. Same poly clear I have used before, but alas, I can't have that, so I need to sand it down and will redo all of the clear. Ugh, it was going so well. But if I want it to come out great then I need to be patient.

In the meanwhile, the body paint is done and is drying in the coat closet (my wife hates this) and is ready for a quick wet sand and then clear coat it.

So a bit frustrating to redo the neck finish, but happy with the body. Being patient and not accepting flaws is hard to do, but I learning that is the norm with this stuff (hopefully I get better). Will sand the neck tomorrow and try again.

Can take a few weeks for the paint to harden properly.

Stick it in a nice hot loft if you have one.

I may have bit impatient, just the others I have done were fine after a few days. I gotta sand it down and fix, and then it is gonna sit for a long while:)

Preparing for wetsanding. 800, 1000, 1500. took out some very small drips and looked good.

First couple of coats of clear. Getting shiny. Wind is picking up, so no more coats so I avoid some dust from outside getting on it. With this white - everything shows up on it. Time to build a proper spray booth eh.

You're the envy of us all, beautiful colour too, top marks!

I have the same problem with the dull spots from the stand, with acrylic lacquer on 2 guitars and antique oil on another.
It's the rubber or foam reacting with the clear, don't know how or why, I now use a soft cotton cloth over the stands rubber tubing to rest the neck

A drop of washing up liquid helps when wet sanding.
Cleans and lubricates.

Sanding is fun.  So I think the problem was spraying to much laquer without proper drying time bewteen coats.  Having let it sit a long time, the clear is now hard so started sanding it down to see if I can get it smooth without having to do extra coats.  No wet sanding, just dry 600 to start with and it is good.  Next will be some wet sanding to see if I can get it right without adding additional coats.

Sorry for the delay on this one.  I really made a poor choice on the clear, it yellowed on the white and needs to be redone.  I've been building guitars from scratch so  this guitar has been on the back burner.  Sad as this was my primary project months ago.  I'm  almost done with my current build and now that the humidity is now subsiding in florida I will get to finishing this one and my X390 with a darker green.  Lesson learned, too many projects = nothing gets finished.

So I sanded a corner in the top right of this pic to show the difference in the white with the Clear I used.  Lighting doesn't make it as obvious in the pic, but you can see most of the guitar is 'yellowed' a bit, and the part I sanded is much brighter.

My plan is to make it look new, I'm not going for a faded vintage look.  I ordered new clear 2 weeks ago and it is finally showing up tomorrow after a few emails to the company.

While I don't mind sanding, I don't like sanding something I've already done so that has put this on the back burner.  But I should have it sanded back to white Saturday, and then if I don't sand through the color, then spray the clear later in the day.  If all goes well, let it dry for a week or two, then wetsand and put this one together and sell to Corsair Smile   Oh wait - I'm keeping this one eh!

Jon - I can always make another, but It would not be cheap Smile  Keep your eye out for a cheap Spectrum body, and when you are ready for one, let me know.  I still have the template for the neck I built, and you can come up with all kinds of ideas to have it the way ya want it.

That being said, I did sand down the yellowish clear on the body and neck today.  I started to spray the new clear on the neck and it is looking goooooood.

It actually looks nicer than the first try as I got to flatten out some odd spots on the headstock.

Also did a final clear coat on a Tele build that I'm doing that is bound for NJ as soon as it is dry and wetsanded.    Did I mention I sanded and sprayed a lot today?

This is Nitrocellulose laquer.  the first attempt I think I used Acrylic.   I've used Poly U with success as well.

So I finished taking the yellow clear off today - the inner part of these horns are not fun to sand.   Sanded down to the wood in a few spots so started to add some additional coats of white, but glad to see it bright white again.   I will add more white to it tomorrow then let it dry for a bit before applying the new clear.  This is the project on the top of my list at the moment so hopefully will get this done soon

Too long on this one, so it's my focus now.  Happy ya like the bright white - the yellowing of the laquer may have made it seem vintage, but I want it to look new and bright.
