I believe that in some single coil pickups, the pole pieces themselves are built from Alnico and thus do not need a bar magnet on the bottom, Didn't the original strats have that?

with a classic humbucker, the pole pieces are not magnetic in themselves, but a bar magnet is used instead.

It looks like what they have done is build an humbucker with magnetised pole pieces.....my buest guess would be that they were trying to get a more natural single coil strat type sound out of the neck pickup when the coil splitter is engaged.

of course you get singles with bar magnets on the bottom too, but those are usually on cheaper guitars and will (as previously mentioned) almost certainly be ceramic magnets, and don't really sound like proper strat pickups.

Is it exactly like the guitar in the video? If so, it's not a "Westone" exactly, but a fake Westone that we see floating around sometimes. Probably made in China, these guitars were just branded with the Westone name. We've seen BC Rich Mockingbird copies and Les Paul copies like this.

Do you like it? If so, that's what really matters.

Yeah, this is definitely not a Matsumoku instrument, and as Chad points out, Chinese made. (If I recall correctly the Westone name is now owned by a German company?)
The video is just plain silly (Weston?!?) and definitely not a 30 year old instrument.
