Jon Lord Passing RIP!

Post by blackstrat on Tue Jul 24, 2012 1:03 pm

I was very sad to hear of Jon Lord, (the organ player for Deep Purple in case someone doesn't know) passing. I loved the early Deep Purple music with Lord and Blackmore. He was a classically trained pianist and the music he could just rip out of that Hammond always amazed me. I really liked the way he and Blackmore would trade riffs back and forth. He will be truly missed.

Yea, a sad day indeed.
saw many tv shows with John as a talking head, always honest, humorous and insightful. hell of a keys man too. R.I.P.

Oh gosh, that's terrible. Was a huge fan of his when I was a kid. I still am actually. A truly great and inspired musician. RIP.

What a talented musician. Almost enjoy his solo on Highway Star more than Blackmore's.

...almost. RIP. Sad

A great loss, but - Ken Hensley wrote the book on how to play organ in a rock band, not Jon Lord

Hmmmm.... Gary Fisher was there in the early 60s as well....

Anyway, if you want showy on a B3, Keith Emersons your man!

Emerson didn't play them, he totrtured them. You'd never see Ken Hensley sticking knives in them....

Who's Gary Fisher?

Sorry; I meant Matthew Fisher.. Procol Harums' B3 player; the one that sued Gary Brooker...

Yeah, Emerson was a bit of a wild man, but bloody good to watch...

I am sorry, but Jon Lord was classically train pianist, and as much as I love older Uriah Heep, Jon Lord could play circles around Ken Hensley. But this isn't a who can outplay who thread but a thread on the passing of a very talented musician and one of the originators of classically flavored Hard Rock. RIP Jon!

Will miss you Jon Lord !!! One of the best...What happened to those B3's ? Are there any bands now a day use them? I can't name any bands that have used them in at least 20 years. And that leslie sound was fantastic !!!

Jon Lord was among the best. As was pointed out his phrasing matched that of Blackmore and the two of them seemed to be able to build riffs that had amazing precision and _direction_ eg, intro, main, conclusion, which is lacking in many otherwise good bands.
