I am unfaithful....

Post by corsair on Fri Jul 19, 2013 5:28 am

Check out this rather awful picture.....

.... note the 3 Westones, 2 Electras, high end Vantage and heavily mucked about Fender Stratocaster.

Now, guess which one is getting all the "loving" at the moment?!

Strat, actually! I dragged it out of its disintegrating case and gave it a thrashing and re-discovered that it plays really well, and that I really, really liked playing it!!

Is this allowed?!

Hee hee hee.... a little, yeah! However I have to point out that the Strat has been reasonably well leaned on and is set up to precisely how I like 'em, and has a custom paint job to boot, so the posing factor is quite high!
And bear in mind, too, that the Westones and the Electras are bolt neck workhorses with only the Vantage being a high end guitar, albeit one with many, many miles and much sweat, blood and tears "under the hood"!
The build quality of the Strat certainly isn't up to the standard of the Japs, but it really does "feel" right under my hands....

Well, there's a reason the Strat is the most copied guitar, apart from the "cool" factor it's a fabulous guitar, they sound great, the body just fits right and coupled with a tight radius neck what's not to like?

Must confess that I'm not keen on the small radius fingerboard and I'd love to get a flatter radius on my strat.....but would then probs hate it and want the round one back!

I get your point Bob, but it doesnt concern me as I pick around the neck pup mostly.
and there's not a great deal of difference between a strat and say a Westie Concord/Spectrum/thunder volume knob placement....half an inch difference?

Although I don't use a strat, I do have a soft spot for them and one of those bits that I like about them is the volume knob placement. If you use the volume knob to whip up and down between your chord volume and solo volume, it's placed perfectly.

I love my strat! Probably play it more than any of my 30 guitars. Fujigen made in the 80's, amazing feel and quack.  I love the strat tone more than any other guitar, and most of my favorite guitarists played one. Gilmour (best tone ever?) SRV, Garcia (at one point) Jimi .etc.   No worries John, they are amazing guitars Very Happy

The only place for a volume knob is where it is on a strat. I do wish that I could get rid of the middle pickup but still have it do what it does as it's roght where I pick. Malmsteen lowers hid to the pickguard........but then never ues it!

... yet something else he stole from Ritchie Blackmore, along with the fast triplets and quasi-classical playing!! In fact, I think his signature Strat has only bridge and neck pups??

Generated a little discussion there, and nice to see Martin weigh in; long time no see!!

I don't think that Stratocasters are amazing guitars per se; rather an inspired piece of industrial design which ticks all of the boxes; and made the electric revolution available to everyone, which was yet another part of Leos ethos and genius! For my money, the volume knob is a little too close to the string courses but that's a minor, niggling nit-picking issue not worthy of argument; it can indeed do exactly what it says on the box, as it were!

The amount of people that don't use the middle pickup on a Strat is quite surprising. I love the middle pickup as much as the neck pickup for the same reason......

No doubt you will have noticed on any guitar, that when you play around the 12 - 14th frets on the neck pickup, you get that ooohy nasaly sound that is being caused by the neck pickup being positioned around half way between those frets and the bridge, which is where the harmonics are strongest. As you move your playing up to the top of the neck where it meets the body, this nasaly sound is no longer evident as you have now moved your fretting close to the neck pickup. It's true to say that if you were to swap to your bridge pickup at this point, you would hear virtually no difference in tone alteration, as both pickups would be of equal distance from a bridging point of the string. However, if as you rise to play on these higher register frets, you swap to the middle pickup, you will find that oooohy nasal sound re-appears, as now that middle pickup is central to the bridging points. This is a really great tonal effect if used thoughtfully. Try it (if you haven't already that is). Martin.

Hello John, I've been out of sight for a bit, but I thought I would take a look in. I've had a Spectrum ST Bass that I've had for quite some time that I've finally managed to get around to renovating. I'll be posting a couple of pics when I get chance (in a different thread of course) to give you a blimp at it. Martin.

Certainly stood the test of time the Strat ,Tele, Precision and Jazz bass.

I was round my dad's at the weekend and played his 50's contour strat through his blues jnr. and was shocked how much I enjoyed the strat, I've never owned a Fender and always thought if I did go for one it would be a jazzmaster but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised

I bought a Mexican powerhouse strat around 99, 2000, and I love it Smile, its the best sounding strat I have played. I don't play it too much because of the styles I have been playing, but recently I have been playing her quite a bit and she's beautiful. what I love about different guitars is that they force you to play different styles

I have sold guitars in the past and regretted it ever since - a beautiful Jap tele and a really nice s series Ibanez (prestige I think). My new motto is never sell a good guitar Smile

Life's a funny thing, eh; I wasn't getting any spark from the guitars so I've packed them all away in the shed, in their cases and shall leave them be for awhile to see if there's any juice left!

I'll finish my Vantage Avenger and have that on display in the house, but that'll be about the sum total of it for the present.

I shall still check in and keep an eye on you fellas...

to me, playing music is a spiritual thing. it comes from a special place where words do not exist.
sometimes one needs to sit quietly (actually, or metaphorically) for a while to find the muse

What Mike said.

I think those of us of a *ahem* certain age have all had a guitar hiatus from time to time. The reasons vary, but it does seem to happen. I thought I was finished on at least 3 occasions to date. Then I got major GAS about 5 years ago, and got very silly with the collection of Mats + "other" guitars.

I was doing OK until the stroke, and that really buggered up the playing. But not my interest and involvement with guitars.

Just don't leave it too long John or you'll seize up!! Remember to SQUEEZE....and release. clown
