Pickup finish

Post by Catalyst on Sat Aug 03, 2013 5:21 pm

All 3 pickups on my Concord III have lost their original black finish and now look a bit of a mess to be honest. I'm all for the 'well used' look, shows it's been used as it should, but I just wondered if there is anyway to get them looking half decent without actually replacing them?
What is the actually finish on the pickups anyway - I have no idea scratch

I've recently replaced the knobs with nice brass ones so I just need to do something with the pickups.

My first instinct is to just replace the covers, assuming the pole centres are standard. Damian?

That's strange, looks like they've been sprayed black.
Black plastic should remain black! It's black to the core.

Concord III's where white from the off. Fine flat those back?? or nice cream one's???

Strat covers do fit but you'll have to check your pole spacing.
All the Westone single Concord pups are the same spacing ie. bridge is the same as the middle, neck.

the Concord III Pearl White had black covers from the off.
getting new covers for Concord single coils is tricky, I've changed the pups on my 82 C II and kept the original black covers, but they are very narrow indeed, had to really force them on hard.
Thats a beautiful Concord III there, nice!

It appears they had both black and white.

Especially in your case by the looks of it....Shocked

Never had a problem fitting new covers to a Concord pup. Replacement pups are another thing.

Strat cover 52mm

Fits perfectly no problems and in the scratch plate as well.

Thanks for your input gents, appreciated.

Now for the embarrassing part....upon close inspection what I assumed to be the silver showing through the black is actually the black showing through the silver....someone had actually gone to the extent of totally removing all 3 coils and painting them with a metallic silver paint.

Why?...I have no idea, but I guess the next step is to take them out and get that god awful silver removed.
I'm guessing the methods suggested in the other thread about the removal of permanent marker would be the way to go.

Thanks again Very Happy
