Respray headstock but keep inlay intact?

Post by Clive Shakedown on Sat Dec 14, 2013 1:29 pm

hello everyone.

I am refurbing a Westbury Track 4 bass, (almost a Westone!)

And I would like to keep the MOP inlay while re spraying the headstock.

how would I go about this?  the whole bass will be restored and it would be a shame not to do the headstock face.

any ideas would be very appreciated.

Just do local repairs with black ink marker or nail varnish and give the whole thing a coat of clear.

I would go with 1000 grit wet sandpaper to slowly take off the clear coat.  If you hit the inlay or the paint then it is time to stop.  1000 is very fine and it will take some time, but leaves little room to make a mistake.  put it on a flat block so all is even.  It can be done.  Patience is needed.  Once the sanding looks good - spray the clear.  Any questions - IM me, I have done this before.

Id do a bit of both. Fine wet sand then local colour and spot repair, if necessary a few coats of clear.

I saw this for sale but decided to pass as it was just too much for me to take on.
Best of luck with the refurb, it's a thing of beauty for sure  Cool

Keep us posted with pics if you have time

Thanks to all for the advice.
It is a massive amount of work but I think it will be worth it in the end.
After 2 weeks of careful truss rod tightening the neck now has a sensible amount of relief, the action was sky high when I got it, will post pics as and when things take shape.
Thanks again.
