Can't believe I'm asking this...

Post by The Chad on Thu Jan 09, 2014 4:23 pm

Anyone ever successfully paint a humbucker bobbin?!

Go ahead, laugh.  I'll wait till your done.

Ok.

Too cheap to buy a zebra pickup, and I have this great black Suhr SSH+ I'd love to paint one coil into a zebra.

And yes, I'm aware that I could just sell it and buy a zebra, but that's too much work.

So has anyone done this?

Hi Chad, Happy new year!

A mate of mine painted one bobbin of a cream HB black to make a zebra.....he just painted it with matt black model paint and a brush. Masking and spraying should work fine as far as i can see.

Chad

You can buy self adhesive vinyl bobbin covers on Ebay. Haven't tried them but I have seen them.

Great input men, thanks for not laughing at me!

Funny how "cheap" we can be in some areas yet so extravagant in others.

cheers   My wallet squeaks sometimes when I open it, too.

I figure I'll try painting it, that model paint is a great idea.  Failing that, I can remove the paint and just use a bobbin cover.  Just what I need, another little project.   Cool

I would mask and spray it, much neater finish and less likely to chip.
good luck  Smile

Splurged for a $1.59 bottle of cream model paint last night and did the edges.  A spray for the top will be the way to go, right on sarge.

Check that your paint is compatible.
Model paint is usually enamel. Spray will contain solvents.

Do a test??

Well I did it.  Painted the rim with a detail brush and model enamel and bought matching spray paint (made for plastics) for the top.  Worked out really well, I was surprised.  The key is to go overboard masking off any part you don't want painted.

It looks great.  Upon close inspection you can tell, but you'd never think to do that since it looks factory made.

So yes, painting a humbucker can look just fine.

Would I do it again?  Probably, yes.  But only if I get a killer deal on a black humbucker.  Otherwise I'll just buy a zebra.   Laughing

That stinks, this photo isn't good, looks a lot better in person.  This pic turned out too bright because of my flash.  I did the whole top the sides, so it looks like colored plastic. When you pick up the guitar you wouldn't know it had been painted, nothing "looks" painted about it in person.   Does on here though.

I still need to use an exacto knife and cut off the little burrs around the pole pieces.  Overall looks great.  And lemme tell ya, a Suhr SSH+ if great for high gain.  I may swap it out for a PAF style if I get to playing more bluesy material on it.

Sure is.   Laughing   So glad I don't see it that way, 'cause if I did I'd have to sell it immediately.  And that would be a crappy situation since I just bought it.
