Wierd Thunder 2 on the Bay

Post by Steve777 on Tue May 12, 2009 8:21 am

Try this one for size : a Thunder 2 with a bolt on neck, active, bendmaster, locknut, and two single coils and a humbucker. The owner says it looks original.

Was on briefly last night, but now sold !!! Has someone spotted a prototype?

You're right ! it is more or less the same. So, returning to my question, are these guitars specials, samples or something we have overlooked?

There are no rules.

There are models that exist but that were not mentioned in the catalogs or price lists.

We will continue to see these oddballs coming out of the woodwork.

There was an Electra on Ebay last week that looked EXACTLY like a Thunder I-A body with an Electra strat-like maple neck bolted on it. I believe it was genuine.

A few years ago, I had a nice email correspondence with a gentleman who had been a St. Louis Music salesman or possibly a music store salesman who specialized in SLM merchandise. He was personally acquainted with Tom Presley, and was very knowledgeable with everything SLM. He had produced an audio guide on how to operate the controls on the somewhat-complicated Spectrum FX guitars and he marketed this recording on Ebay for a time. I have since lost his contact information. Anyway - he mentioned that SLM would occasionally produce non-standard models for 'focus groups' (I believe that is the term he used). At the time, I had recently acquired an oddball Pantera X-390 with unique features and as he had never seen one before, he surmised that it may have been one of these one-off models. I have seen another since and I now believe that it was just the X-390DBK which is documented in one or two price lists but no catalogs - so it was an odd-ball and very rare, but not unique as Ebay showed us a few months ago. But his guess was a good one and he educated me that one-offs or odd-balls do exist and surface from time to time.

He had an amazing Spectrum collection.

Have you got pics of that collection, Colt - I'd love to see it!!! I've got a oddball SLM too; my Genesis II has oddly placed controls, no pull pots and a 4way switch!
