How Kewl is this? (picture heavy post)

Post by Barry on Fri May 30, 2014 3:57 pm

The usual apologies for the rubbish pix.
I only have my old Android phone with me at the shop and it has no flash.

Yep, it's an early 2000's Mosrite Ventures reissue. One of our regular customers brought her in for a restring, and general drooling! He's mainly a Gretsch collector but he also has a few other eclectic choices in his collection like this one.

Lots of interesting details on these, like the Moseley vibrato, unique single coils, zero fret, and of course the funky reverse-Strat body with equally funky machine head placement.

Not only zero fret, but damn near fretless! the frets are very thin and barely above the fretboard. Takes quite awhile to get used to the feel. String spacing is also very close. Had a hell of a time trying to tame it with my old arthritic fingers.

That just looks classy... Smile

The trems a work of art, like a sculpture.

What you think of those pickups? sharp things eh! I like 'em.

Always fancied one, you know, simply because of the "out there" looks, and because of "Walk, don't run".

Thanks for that, Barry!!

A pleasure sharing. Figured there would be a few admirers here.  Laughing

Damian, the pups have an amazing sound. Quite a bit different from a typical Strat or even a Gretsch. Quite distinctive.

The owner popped in just at closing time (as the bugger always does when we're trying to wrap up). He's a Chet Atkins finger style player so I left the action on this higher than normal. But man he made it sound like a "Venture" was in the next room. Sounded great through the Fender '68 Custom Deluxe Reverb we have on the floor!

Footnote:
As I was chatting with the owner I glanced down and noticed that the bass E was entering quite high into the vibrato. In other words, it was almost straight relative to the A which dropped down as you would expect. I thought I had done summit dumb at first, then I had a look at the ball end of the strings. I was surprised to see that the anchor points are staggered vertically rather than being in a line. Very unusual. Dunno why but there's likely an explanation on the Interwebs somewhere. Even the owner hadn't noticed that before.

Yeah, they are. But I did struggle a bit with the string placement on the saddle rollers. If you look at the neck pickup you'll see they track correctly over the poles. Not so much at the bridge. Not wildly off but not where you'd ideally like them.

As I said, the string spacing is rather tight on this thing and you tend to fiddle a bit (OK a lot) jumping the strings from groove to groove to find a happy place. I was intending to measure it but I got busy wif other stuff and didn't get around to it.

Those rollers are also slightly canted towards the bass side which made it even more puzzling as to where to drop the strings. Again, no idea why.

Here's a similar type trem. arrangement.
Both exactly the same model guitar

Looks like one of them has been welded on upside down or turned around. Both work fine though.

Yup, that's the string arrangement Damian. Odd.
