Tops for me are...
1. the quality
2. the obscurity
3. the great price point
4. some of the designs

I learnt to play on a Prestige 250 (lucky me) so thought all guitars would sound that good
I love the PEQ controls, rolling it off for something different

I like Spectrum GT/FXs because:

- If you can't get the sound you want - it's your problem
- They are good quality instruments
- They are (were ?) cheap as chips so I can afford a few
- I don't have to be too precious with them when gigging because they're hard as nails
- They're not "the usual"

This should probably get moved to the "general" section, rather than the gallery, unless we're all going to start posting pics of our favorite Westones too...

Anyway, this is a fun topic. My answer:

1. The neck profile on my Spectrum II XA1230. I haven't played anything like it. I've recently tried both an Ibanez JEM 7VWH (which I loved- amazing guitar, don't get me wrong) and an Ibanez RG655, and to me, the Westone neck profile is more comfortable and easier to play. And it's a fast neck, too.
2. The other reason is more personal- this particular guitar has been with me since I was 13. I'm 37 now, so it's been over two decades of ownership, and has been with me through a lot of life experiences (some good, some bad). It's got its fair share of knocks, dings, and scratches, but that just tells me it's been played and loved. And I know it well enough that I can get almost any sound out of it that I need. I was jamming a few weeks ago, and one of the guys described a certain sound he wanted me to try to get- I didn't even have to think about it, I just reached down, changed pickup positions, adjusted the volume and tone a little bit, and -poof- magic, I was there.
3. It's unique. In a world of mass-produced guitars, the same major manufacturers (Fender, Gibson, PRS, Ibanez, et al), "relic" guitars (a trend I never understood- what fun is buying a beat up guitar? Buy your guitar brand new and beat it up yourself by playing it), etc, etc, etc, having a Westone feels like being part of a secret society, just without the strange initiation rites and attempts at world takeover.
4. The Rail. (drops mic)

For me, the sheer quality of the build shone through; my first Westone was my Genesis II which I picked up in Christchurch, NZ in amongst a pile of unloved guitars at tbe back of a pawn shop - it really stood out and grabbed my attention!

I wasn't in there to buy a guitar at all, and I had happily gigged my Vantage VA900 - now retired and living with others of its ilk - without backup for 25 years, so it was something of a bolt from tne blue!
Since then, and having found this site in its original form, a little understanding of what Matsumoku in general, and Westone in particular, led me to where I am now; owner of some very nice examples of quality Japanese workmanship!

I think tbe Westones lit my fire because of the bright colours, gloriously riotous shapes and attention to detail, to whit, the Raider II I restored to an original blue/gold sparkle finish!! The Spectrums I own still impress me with the price, finish, capability and sheer playability though the necks on the Korean Clipper 4112 and Spectrum II are the best I have ever played; outrageously good!

I don't own any of the premium models - Prestige, Session or Pantera 350/390 - but cannot imagine them to be anything less than absolutely superb, after all, the VA900 is such an instrument and I couldn't break that in 25 years of pub and club gigs!!

Since starting on this journey, and now I fear I'm at the end of my acquisition cycle because really, I was a player more than I was ever a collector!, I have acquired more Vantages and a couple of Aria Pro IIs but the Westones will always be just a little bit special.... even if they are sitting in tneir cases under a tarpaulin in the shed....

This, for me, anyway, has also been something of a voyage of discovery shared with like-minded people in a global village who have never once failed to add value to whatever project I had going by chipping in with knowledge, information, tips and tricks, bits and pieces and - most importantly, I feel, encouragement!
It might pay to bear in mind that this community while it exists to serve an obscure, foreign guitar brand, would be nothing without the people who make it up...

.... you fellas rock!!

Bassist here.  For me the Thunder basses, especially 1As, have the tone I am looking for.  Add a robust constitution, great build quality and exceptional value and you have a winner.  Thank Heavens for headstock snobs.

More specifically I am lucky enough to have a Pantera Deluxe II X790 and decided to have a tiny bit of lifting paint on the headstock around the tuners sorted out - it is now virtually museum quality!  The luthier who did the work said it was the finest bass guitar he had ever had in his hands.

But the year before last I discovered that the Westone Thunder 1A version 3 was lightweight, as opposed to the boat anchors of v1 and 2. and I could again play a Thunder bass without lumbar complications.  It arrived on the same day as a Fender logo JV0XXX Squier Precision I had tracked down.  The Thunder made me smile every bit as much when i put it on and felt how good it was.
