Re: Wanted ! Decals!
I've made my own waterslide decals before now; get some waterslide decal paper from an arts and crafts supplier - I got mine online - and do some playing around with fonts and sizes in Word, or whatever word processor you use, to get the final result. Most modern home printers are quite capable of printing this type of paper and good quality ink is better than generic ink, unfortunately!
To apply them, first you must seal the decals with some sort of lacquer - 2 thin coats are better than one thick one! - then, you must use a wetting agent on the headstock to allow you to position the decal correctly and finally, when it has dried completely, you can clear coat over the top of everything.
Most decal paper comes with application instructions, so you're pretty much good to go!

Re: Wanted ! Decals!
You will have to buy white decal paper as you can't print colours onto clear, I recently refurbished a pair of Thunder basses for a "client" who wanted gold and silver decals, I went here
http://www.rothkoandfrost.com/custom-waterslide-decals-uk-for-guitars-bikes/
And they are incredible! So so thin they're easy to hide the edges.

Don't know what printer you use...
Of course you can print colour inks on clear.
If you use a white paper you'll have to cut out each letter otherwise you'll have white between the letters....

Re: Wanted ! Decals!
Colours on clear decal paper, on black headstock just won't work.
One trick is to colour the white paper the same as the headstock, and the logo in the chosen colour.

Did you take any photos of the R+F logos?
Their place is just around the corner from my daughters home.

Re: Wanted ! Decals!
just finished this bass for the guy today, not used the silver decal yet, that's set aside for the 3rd of his Thunders....

oh and if you get these decals, be very careful not to put a too heavy wet coat on, or this might happen......

Shrinkage!
either it was a too wet coat, or it was too cold, or as I suspect is the case a mix of both. I had to order another (+1 for myself), sand off the first and do it all again.

Re: Wanted ! Decals!
This is the first I did for him, my own printed decal on MrDecalPaper's paper, in comparison to the R+F paper it's thick as card!

Re: Wanted ! Decals!
The metallics are a problem for home printers; I want a decal of the AIF hat badge for my Bougainville guitar and I cannot find anyone locally prepared to do it for less than a kings ransom because the printers that are capable of printing out good quality gold and silver ink are apoarently quite expensive commercial grade things....
I've contacted Rothco and Frost but haven't heard back from them yet....
I was told some years ago, too, that you cannot print white, hence if there's any white in your design, you must use decal paper with white carrier film and that said, I've printed designs onto clear carrier film with no problems at all; the Raider decals were red onto clear and the Corsair Avengers headstock was a mixture of clear and white carrier film...

Re: Wanted ! Decals!
Yes R+F stuff is good quality.
You have to put a thin coat on first and let it really dry before doing more coats. "Many thin coats are better than one thick one". Heard that before...
Here's a R+F logo for a Strat/Tele custom

Re: Wanted ! Decals!
Yep, my first shrunken effort was 4 "dust" coats then 2 thicker, and 1 wet coat, it was the last wet coat that buggered it.
the 2nd effort was dust coats all the way, about 10 in total, it was also much easier to hide the decal edges this way.

Re: Wanted ! Decals!
I have the bird logo on photoshop file if anyone needs it, though R+F queried if I wanted it done @22mm, not sure how it showed up at 22mm as I printed out from that file @44mm.
