Thunder 1 - wiring problem?

Post by Rob-Thunder on Tue May 17, 2016 1:59 pm

Hi,

I have just changed the coil splitting switch on my Thunder 1 (as the old one was broken). The good news is that pick up that I thought was broken seems to be working okay (see my earlier post).

The bad news is that - on certain settings - I am not getting any sound. Is that normal? (Incidentally, with the previous broken switch I couldn't change the settings, so presumably that is why I wasn't getting any sound before.)

I set up the new switch as the old one was - and also checked it against the wiring diagram here - http://www.westone.info/wiring/thunder1/index.html (the one at the bottom: the thunder 1, not the 1T).

(The switch is a 3 way switch. Not sure it is meant to be, or if the original was two way.)

Basically, this is the result I am getting:

On bridge pick up
 - switch down - works
 - switch in the middle - works, and different (fuller sound? Or deeper? And louder. So my guess is this position is the full humbucker. Does that sound right?)
 - switch up - works (but no different from the middle)

On the neck pick up
 - switch down - works
 - switch in the middle - nothing (except some hum)
 - switch up - same as in the middle

Is that normal? Or does this suggest that there is something wrong with the wiring somewhere?

Any comments appreciated. (If it helps I could provide a photo.)

Coil tap switch is and should be a DPDT on/on. 2 way.

If you need an original(flat toggle) give me a shout.

Also, I have just gone through the wiring diagram, wire by wire, to check each one is where it should be. The wiring on the guitar does in fact seem to be where it should be. (and I haven't changed anything. When I changed the switch over, I put the same wires back where they were.)

Based on the description above, any ideas what the problem could be?

Oh, and even if you don't know what the problem is, if anyone who has a Thunder 1 could tell me what I should be getting from each position, that would be helpful too.

Thanks

Sorry westbone - I didn't see that you had already replied.

I have a DPDT on/off/on.

If it doesn't make any functional difference (other than having an unnecessary extra position) I think I'd probably be happy to keep the switch I have.

But if you think this might be part of the problem, then yes, I might be interested. (Though I think I had the problem before I changed the switch. I had thought the pick up wasn't working, but I am now assuming the old switch was in the position that currently isn't working.)

Thanks

Either way it should be a on/on DPDT not on/off/on.
Don't complicate matters....Wink
