Song lyrics that tickle your fancy...

Post by corsair on Sun Jul 23, 2017 7:04 pm

Just as a bit of a giggle, lyrics from songs that make you smile when you hear them, either because they're funny, quirky or have some personal resonance. I'll start with some Manfred Mann..

"My name is Jack, and I live in the back, of the Greta Garbo home for wayward girls and boys..."

Alan Price Set;

"I may go out tomorrow, if I can borrow some clothes to wear"

Bob Dylan;

"Gonna raise me an army of tough sonsa bitches, gonna raise me an army from the orphanages"

Pink Floyd;

" Ticking away, the moments that make up the dull day.. fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way"

C'mon, y'all... what you got?!

Geez not many takers on this topic eh?
There must be a bizillion song lyrics that make me snort milk out my nose when I hear 'em, but do you think I can remember any of them? Idea

I do like the reference to the Jerry Jeff Walker song you quoted above as being from Alan Price (Simon Smith and the Amazing Dancing Bear). I have a version by one of my all time favourite singers, Harry Nilsson. Very funny and well performed.
Come to think of it, he has an awful lot of naughty lyrics in many of his songs, like:

  • "Tell her you love her, roll the World over, and give her a kiss...and a feel"
  • "You're breaking my heart, you're tearin' it apart, so, fudge You" (I didn't write "fudge")

Or, how about naughty Beatles,
"Why don't we do it in the road? No one will be watching us, why don't we do it in the road?"

Yeah, Alan Price is a favourite of mine and has been for many years, and that version of Simon Smith is just brilliant!

I am struck now and again by the sheer profundity of various lyrics - those above are but a few that I have floating about in head; it's a curse!! Laughing

Indeed, Barry - no much movement here, eh?!

and i didn't feel lonely til i thought of you

As distinct from the accursed "ear worm"? Those bloody things can drive me mad!

Bloody idiotic lyric snippets from stupid pop songs that pop into my head out of nowhere. Usually something I hate too! Angry

Oh, yeah... I get the earworms as well, and yes; generally some modern pop song with a good hook!! I've had an Antsy MacLean song on a loop for the last two days! I love his stuff, I really do, but some kind of respite would be nice!!

Take a look at my girlfriend
She's the only one I got
Not much of a girlfriend
Never seem to get a lot

Take a jumbo across the water
Like to see America
See the girls in California
I'm hoping it's going to come true
But there's not a lot I can do

Could we have kippers for breakfast
Mummy dear, Mummy dear
They got to have 'em in Texas
Cos everyone's a millionaire

I'm a winner, I'm a sinner
Do you want my autograph
I'm a loser, what a joker
I'm playing my jokes upon you
While there's nothing better to do

Don't you look at my girlfriend
She's the only one I got
Not much of a girlfriend
Never seem to get a lot

Take a jumbo cross the water
Like to see America
See the girls in California
I'm hoping it's going to come true
But there's not a lot I can do

Breakfast in America; has it all really, eh!!

The only entire song that makes me stop and listen when it comes on would be Roads to Moscow by Al Stewart, which tells the story of the Great Patriotic War from a grunts point of view...
.... though Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald is right up there...

Every November it's all over the radios here.

Now that I live right next to the Welland Canal and the Great Lakes shipping traffic, I look at these huge cargo ships coming through the locks and can only imagine the terror those poor bastards endured. Lake Superior didn't get its name by accident, it's an inland SEA, and just as vicious and unpredictable!

See, I first heard that song when I was 14 and painting roofs during the school holidays so I had no idea that it was an actual ship that Lightfoot was singing about and the radio station in Christchurch, NZ really gave it some welly but it had - and has - quite some resonance for all that to me!

Yeah, to those of us who haven't seen REALLY big lakes, I imagine Superior to be quite something...

Despite their miserable reputation 'The Smiths' often bring a smile to my face

I dreamt about you last night and fell out of bed twice
two lumps please, your the bees knees
but so am I

a boy in the bush is worth 2 in the hand
I think I can help you get through your exams

I was looking for a job and I found a job and heaven knows I'm miserable now

I said Charles, don't you ever crave
To appear on the front of the Daily Mail
Dressed in your Mother's bridal veil?

So, I broke into the palace
With a sponge and a rusty spanner
She said : "Eh, I know you, and you cannot sing"
I said : "That's nothing - you should hear me play piano"

Oh, I didn't realise that you wrote poetry
I didn't realise you wrote such bloody awful poetry, Mr. Shankly

Frankly, Mr. Shankly, since you ask
You are a flatulent pain in the arse
I do not mean to be so rude
Still, I must speak frankly, Mr. Shankly

I agree with you there, several songs from specific Ladies of Pop remain in your head for days until madness sets in.

And of course those recognizable songs from a single lyric line like:

"Hope you guess my name.."

"You can check out any time you like,.."
