My guitar hero? hmmm I'd have to say Allan Holdsworth is the all time master ( Andre Segovia Heard Allan before he died and said,"Allan is the best I have ever heard" )
but trying to emulate him is ridiculous and as I have mentioned before using his sound would be so obvious it wouldn't be funny though kinda cool if you can pull it off. There's so many I can never really pin one single guy down as my favourite, John McLaughlin, Larry Coryell, Lee Ritenour, Frank Gambale, Pat Metheny, Uli Jon Roth, Frank Marino,Johnny Winter (Akron Tangiers April 10), I could go on and on. As for a guitar hero I have that I can actually have fun with is Robin Trower, I saw him in 1977 and I have been a fan ever since. I used to play alot of RUSH especially moving pictures & hemispheres.

OH ya... hey I got a video of Tony playing guitar with Jethro Tull.. you can clearly see his fingers (chopped off) and the plastic appendages he used.. he used 'em like slide guitar, very cool.

norfolkngood wrote:I listened to Tony Iommi being interviewed on Radio 2 (UK) a couple of nights back, "Iron Man" was one of the featured tracks. The chat was one of the funniest things I've ever heard, seems that the band were totally blown away with the whole devil cult thing and found it hard to live up to the hype. Just a bunch of Brummie lads suddenly found themselves jetting round the States trying to live the dream and be really "paranoid" without much idea other than getting senseless drunk.

Iommi's legendary technical ideas were a result of an accident when he lost the tips of the fingers on his right (fretting) hand in the sheet metal plant where he was working days before Sabbath went pro. With no job he began experimenting with thin strings, down-tuning and plastic finger-tips cut from a plastic washing-up liquid bottle glued onto what was left of his fingers!

The rest is history as the say..

Excellent I too have seen Steely Dan twice around the same times too and I always thought the early pics of Fagen (like on Midnight Special) was the scariest
Barry wrote:I was fortunate enough to see Steely Dan twice in Toronto. The first I think was in '94, the second about '04. Took my wife and son to the last one...he was born in the interim and he seemed to dig the groove masters even at age 10. 'Course now at 14 he wouldn't even admit to liking them!
Becker was great but gotta say that Fagin is getting really scary looking on the TV closeups!

Indeed I forgot about Rory.. I have every one of his recordings... from Taste to tons of bootlegs with great sound if anyone ever needs.... I have quite the collection of players complete audio libraries, every album has an mp3 twin too.

One of my favourites, mentioned here but not showcased much is Rory Gallagher. And here's a selection of stuff - first up is Bullfrog blues:

"too much alcohol":

"going to my hometown"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYYbK2sDaJ4

"Tatooed Lady", good stuff:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdkuHgSzNhg&feature=player_embedded#

"Shadow Play":

Do enjoy the stuff with him playing that absolutely pummelled strat. There's not a lot of finish left on that guitar.

Walter wasn't my fav from Steely.. they had others doing much more memorable solos... Denny Dias, Larry Carlton, Lee Ritenour, Dan Parks!, Elliot Randall, Skunk Baxter, heck even Chuck Berry was on AJA!

Now, ain't it funny how, whilst at first glance, all of our tastes are quite different, there's probably more in common than you'd first think!!

God; Holdsworth - just incomparable!! I cannot begin to work out some - actually most!! - of the intervals he uses!! I'm old school and try to work things out from the record/CD/mp3 and I just can't do it; he's certainly one of a kind. Bloody hard to dance to, tho!!

My personal guru is a NZ guy called James Wilkinson who does things with an acoustic guitar that should be illegal; he's a helluva nice bloke to boot!!

Hehe cool I do the same when working out songs, i knew someone who could play a few of his tunes.. remarkable player, to play Allan's style takes an incomparable understanding of the fretboard, If you've ever seen one of his dvd's for techniques he will always elude to his seeing patterns and his chords. I've seen Allan 12 times... I had dinner with him once before a show and have talked and had drinks with him 10 of the 12 shows... super nice guy... very 'umble.... dig this picture of me and Allan at the Thirsty Ear in Columbus last year.

he loved my shirt.... from one of his earlier concerts. he's even recognises me at shows now!

Nice picture. Is that before or after drinks? Check out the Guy in the back. What's up with him? He probably wishes Allan would take a picture with him.

That's after the show.. lol ya that guy in the pic really bugs me..... damnit get yer own pic!!!... afterwards Allan was breaking down his equipment and I said to him,"what? no roadies?" and he practically threw his Hughes & Kettner Switchblade at me... lol he had a good laff at that, telling me I could hike it out to his truck out back. He tried showing me how his pedals were setup. He used to use a Yamaha UD-Stomp and I didn't see one on stage turns out he uses a series of pedals hooked up to a Mac laptop (it's a program written for MAC apparently) that has all his settings and is the main hub for his 6 (small stomp boxes) pedals that were sittin on a table next to him and he'd reach over and just hit em with his hand...he really didn't go any further on how it works and other people wanted some time with him.

Oh lord don't make me point out all the fallacies of MAC or apple.... Allan said the program was made on a MAC for him specifically as a convenience for him, it wasn't his choice, there was a series of 6 stomp boxes with names written on them like delay1,delay2,chorus, flanger, etc...the pedals were just switches is all they wern't effects pedals at all.

Hee hee... many have tried; including 2 nephews who are very good programmers !! I like 'em because they're computers for Luddites! We're using a netbook with W7 while we're travelling and I'm having god's own trouble making the thing do what I want....

No doubt!

He bought Peter Greene's Les Paul.

In the '60s in England, everyone (including Page, Clapton, and Beck) wanted to play and sound like Peter Greene.

Gary Moore is there!

If you have never heard Peter Greene, then you need to!

There's a sound in my head and Peter Greene is it.
