I've got a XA1330CY , I think

Post by polaris on Sun Dec 13, 2009 12:10 am

Hi
I had this guitar passed on to me and it's missing most of the hardware. I checked on line and think it's a Spectrum XA1330. Aside from the tuners it's still got the Bendmaster Deluxe trem with the arm but that's about all. I know I could probably patch it up enough to play but can anyone tell me is it worthwhile investing the time and money to restore? That's my first inclination but it seems original parts are at a premium and scarce and I'm always short on patience and would like to play the guitar rather than work on it.I think I posted a photo but I don't know if I did it right.

Hi Polaris. Welcome!
I do not see a picture so something's gone wrong somewhere.
You cannot post directly into the forum. You must host the picture somewhere, and then reference the link using the editor button which has a chain link icon on it.

As to whether it's worth it, hey! You're talking to hard-nosed Matsumoku guitar fans here so the answer is almost always, YES!

What you have to decide is whether you have the interest and patience to restore it. There's lots of experienced brains here to pick if you decide to give it a go! Meantime how about that picture? THen we can see what you're up against.

Hi Barry
Thanks for the welcome and the enthusiasm. I understand what you're saying about restoration. I haven't a clue about this photo posting stuff and am not so internet savvy to know how to post on another site.
Anyway you've most likely visited the Westone resource site and thats where I started when I had the guitar given to me. It looks like the 1987 and 1988 catalog photos but of course not as vibrant yellow. The neck plate is stamped 87 12 0379 so I assume it was made in 1987. I'm missing the both nuts, springs, back plate and truss rod cover as well as there is the back plate off of one tuner.
I know I can get the parts but original parts will cost me around $100.00 cdn from SLM, and , well 'tis the season to not blow money on "another" guitar I've been told.
So I may just buy what will work locally and see how it goes.
I've not found much yet out my way in Whitby or Oshawa.

Polaris, the parts you mentioned are rather trivial and I wouldn't let that get in the way of a purchase if you really like the guitar. You can still get locking nuts and screws from "Spares" CLICK HERE. Springs are readily available from any guitar shop for a couple of dollars, As for the back plate and truss rod cover, if you are at all handy you can make your own. I just picked up a Spectrum DX which was missing its covers. I bought a black plastic container from the dollar store and cut my own. I covered the back side with a layer of aluminum foil for shielding and added strength, also from the dollar store!

All you would really need to buy (if you really need it at all) is the TRC and tuner plate.
Shouldn't cost you any more than $20-25 tops! Merry Christmas santa

Hi Barry
I might have lead you you think otherwise , but I am going to make the guitar playable. I just mentioned it because the parts from SLM are "original" but the shipping and exchange rate inflates it a bit too much. The people there were helpful and the parts guy, Tom , dug through bins after he saw my photos and says he's got the original replacement parts.
By the way , it's Dave and I was wondering if everyone on this site was in the UK until you responded.
I think it won't be too long till I get my parts together , and yes my son and I have fabricated plates for a guitar as well and I thank you for the suggestion.
If you e-mail me at <removed> I can forward pics of the guitar if you like.
Thanks
Dave

That's the spirit!

Heck no! We do have a nice Canuck connection, but there are members from Europe, Scandanavia, New Zealand , USA, and others! A lot are also 'cross-fertilized' on the Matusumoku Guitar Gallery site. (Truth be told, I was born in the England...but I've been in Canada since I was 4)
If you e-mail me at..... I can forward pics of the guitar if you like..
(It's not a good idea to publish your email address in a public forum Dave. You might want to delete form your post.) Just PM me with the details and I can post your pix for you if you like.

It's kind of a cr@p shoot. If you want to get "serious" you really have to widen your search. That said, I did get a real nice Vantage Avenger X-77T in Oshawa last summer. Had to drive a hell of a long way to pick her up though! For most of my recent buys I've had to look way out of my local area (sometimes 1 to 1-1/2 hours) But it's usually worth it!
