MMK45 wiring?

Post by munkieNL on Fri Jan 01, 2010 11:22 am

Today I nosedived into the electronics mess on my newly acquired Westone Thunder I. I found out the bridge PU was a real MMk45! With a red wire sticking out of the bottom plate...

After dismantling the pickup the mess looks like this:

1 red wire sticking up into the air. 2 black wires connected to the white output lead. 1 red wire connected to the red output lead. Mantle of the output connected to the bottom plate.

How should I connect it properly?

See wiring schematic HERE

I've seen that schematic already. That's not what I meant. It's about the INTERNAL wiring of the humbucker.

Assuming no-one has rewired it internally, the loose red wire should be connected to the earth wire on the metal backing plate. If you have a multimeter, check the resistance between the white output lead and the loose red one - should be about 11.2K.

The white output lead is the 'hot' /signal wire, the red output lead is for coil tap.

Strike that... that's how the output wires should be connected, but it looks as if someone has rewired it. The coil tap is taken from the junction of the two coils, so on yours the white output lead is the coil tap, the red one is the hot/signal lead. Check the resistance between the white output lead and the loose red one, that will probably be about 11.2k, the resistance between the loose red wire and the black ones (And the other red wire and the black ones) will probably be about 5.6k

With the multimeter on 20 Kohm i get the following readings:

loose red wire - white output 5.7

loose red wire - 2 black wires 5.7

loose red wire - red output 11.2

So output and coil tap are reversed?

Yes, definitely, the output leads have been reversed. Originally the white output lead would have been connected to the red wire (With the other red wire - the loose one - connected to the metal plate) and the red output would have been connected to the two black wires.

The meter readings are fine so the pickup will work once the loose wire is reconnected, you can either leave the output lead as it is and use the whtie wire as coil tap and the red one as signal out, or reverse them (back to the original wiring) if you want the colour coding to match the wiring diagram at westone.info
